SOIS is a small art device for the wall. Built with off-the-shelf hardware components, the device broadcast variations 24/7 – or until the battery dies.

It’s an awesome opportunity to learn different techniques across software, web apps, hardware and 3D printing. Future iterations include custom controlling device and multi-device integration.

I usually start designing things on large screens. There’s always many fun opportunities when you have a lot of space. But building the mobile version of the editor was not obvious at first, as I had to make some sacrifices for the experience to be as fun and easy as possible. I think it’s a very enjoyable interface.

The device itself is not for sale, but anyone can install the MacOS screensaver and enjoy interesting and unpredictable patterns during coffee pause. It’s unlikely you’d see the same variation all the time. The screensaver is just a shell that points to the same broadcast URL the Raspberry Pi uses. If there’s no internet connection, it defaults to black and white variation.

Very fun process learning how to make the enclosure and printing it at home. I purchased the Bambu Lab X2D by recommendation of my friend mason.land.
